The band I call my favorite comes mainly from sentimental reasons. It is a band I have very vivid memories of hearing when I was not very old.
My dad would play their music for my brother and I. I am of the reasoning that I am the only one who still remembers it or still enjoys hearing it.
My favorite band is Fleetwood Mac. To my opinion, their height of making music in the 1970s was when music still stood for something.
Today, too often I hear on the radio music about one-night stands and women being objectified. Granted, when I listen to the radio, it is primarily top 40 stations. I am not saying that all music today is trash. I just see a lot of it that seems to lack substance.
My favorite song by Fleetwood Mac is "Don' Stop." This was before I learned that former president Bill Clinton used it in his first presidential campaign. I was too young at the time to remember this event.
I am a fan of this song because of the lyrics. I have not found any other songs that provide me the same joy and reassurance. I've found that no matter how upset or angry I am, this song can lift my spirits. The lyrics being set to the melody and piano playing provide instant cheer.
This is also a band I can listen to in any mood. This is a challenge for me. I can be sporadic with music. I generally have a short attention span with music, and wish that it fit my mood.
I can find a song by Fleetwood Mac for any of my moods. If I am sad and just want to have that moment of being upset, I have "Dreams" and "Landslide." If I am angry, "Gold Dust Woman" can get down to the root of my anger. Not much brings me more musical joy than to rock out to "Tusk" in my car.
The band members have gone through drug and alcohol issues, and also have dated each other at one time or another. I'm sure many bands have gone through these issues. The Mac seems stronger for them, and is still touring after 30+ and line up changes.
Fleetwood Mac will always hold a special place in my heart. As will anyone else who shares respect and love for this band.
