This is my second year playing for EIU Men's Basketball. Here at Eastern, basketball is one of the most talked about sports. Students, alumni, and fans of Eastern come out to support the basketball team.
So far in the four games (including the exhibition games) the crowds at the basketball games continue to get bigger. This year I believe more students are coming out to support the basketball team because they know us. They also know we have a better team than last year.
As a player, this makes the games more exciting. It feels good to know that your friends or family are in the stands watching you play. Playing for the basketball team means a lot to me.
Growing up I knew I wanted to be a college basketball player. It was a childhood dream of mine. At the time I didn't know what college I was going to attend, but I knew I would play my heart out no matter what school I played for.
As I look back at my decision to attend Eastern, I believe it was a good one. I have met so many people; teammates, alumni, fans, and other students. Playing for Eastern has been a great experience so far. I have enjoyed every moment. I have become a better player and I believe I know the game of basketball more than I did in high school.
While playing here at Eastern, I've had the opportunities to travel and play against other universities and also to enjoy college life.
This season we won our first two exhibition games by a large margin. We began our regular season here at home against Harris Stowe on November 10. We won the game 85-63 with the help of Bobby Catchings. Catchings, a senior guard from Naperville, added 27 points. The win was the first season opener win in five years. Our next game, we hosted Loyola of Chicago. Loyola beat us last year in the ESPN Bracketbuster in February.
This game was a very exciting game. At halftime the game was tied at 31. Loyola went to the free throw line more than we did, in which became the outcome of the game. We lost 72-65. Eastern Men's Basketball continues play next Tuesday at Western Illinois. Eastern defeated Western last year by twenty points.
