Online Reporter spent her Thanksgiving break helping tornado ravaged Greensburg, KS rebuild and recalls her mission trip in four blogs. This is the first of four.
This morning we woke up early. Our room got a wake up call from our advisor Roy around 7 a.m. We woke up to a home cooked Kansas breakfast prepared by several group members and Matt Deighton.
It was a great breakfast to start our day off to. We gathered in the dining area and split up into groups. Some people went to the house we started on day one to work on a roof for the garage, some went to the Santa House, and others went to the volunteer house to continue painting the interior and exterior.
I went back to the Santa House. We arrived there around 8:15 a.m. and continued to paint the house red and white. We took our time to make sure we made all the touch ups needed. We were painting it for the children and we wanted to make it look amazing. As we painted, many people went by honking their horns knowing we were working for their town.
We finished by noon and headed back to the volunteer site where we met up with the other groups for lunch. After lunch my group joined the group painting the volunteer house. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining.
Several people were on the roof, on the ladder, and in the house painting. It was us a chance to talk among ourselves and get to know each other. I went on this trip not knowing anyone and I defiantly met all fifteen people on this trip by the first day.
We worked until the sun went down and headed back for dinner. Tonight a couple of us stayed outside and looked at the stars that were so bright. Behind our trailers there is nothing but empty land that was once a town.
Looking out at the town that is not there anymore makes me want to continue my work tomorrow even more.
