Taking it all for granted

I am thankful for so much in my life.

It's almost laughable, to ponder a response to this question when I were younger. I can only guess that my responses were my parents and my toys. I had no idea as to the true scope of things.

My scope has, of course, since changed.

In my opinion, so much of life is spent not realizing what one truly has. This week, in particular, has been hard because of some extenuating circumstances. It is only hard because I am hard on myself.

I still have a roof over my head. I have a job to earn income from. I have people surrounding me that care about me. I have enough food everyday.

It is hard to realize that some people do not have these guarantees. Examining my life, I take several things for granted. I do not think about not having food or shelter.

I saw a movie for the first time recently called "The Pursuit of Happyness." I am slightly behind in seeing movies. This movie opened my eyes.

I do not think about not having money to afford a place to live. I do not think about spending the night in a bathroom in absence of other shelter. Since I do not see these images everyday, this is something that is easy to forget.

I think it is good to have the reminder though.

After seeing this movie, I realize all that I have. I find it hard to complain about something small or something that is a privilege. Just last night I was pondering how to fix my iPod, as it was a big deal at the time. Music is a joy I hope no one goes without. An iPod is not a necessity. I can survive if it is not working.

I'd like to stop taking things for granted. I have been doing this with people too. I have just assumed that certain people will always be there. Although I know I should not expect them gone, I should truly value them. I should make everyone aware of how much I appreciate them.
