The perfect gift. It's a phrase that looms in the minds of many boyfriends and girlfriends. What do I get her/him for the holidays this year?
Many people spend endless hours stressing about finding that ideal gift for their significant other. If you get something totally wrong, he/she might think you don't care enough about them and you could end up in the doghouse. But how do you find that perfect gift? What's the secret?
It's no surprise that there have been some bad gift choices by boyfriends and girlfriends throughout the years.
Emily Sibley, a senior accounting major, received a hairbrush set one year from her boyfriend.
Kevin Jackson, a senior management major, opened his girlfriend's gift and found a Lord of the Rings candle holder.
Sometimes it's not even about the outrageousness of the gift, but about the thought (or lack thereof) that is behind it.
Karen Klootwyk, a senior accounting major, said the worst gift she ever received was a DVD player.
"It was a nice thing to get but, I didn't want a DVD player from my boyfriend," she said.
Sometimes getting a great gift is about paying attention.
"If your girlfriend tells you she wants something, pick up the hint," said Sibley.
"Get exactly what the girl says she wants," she said. "I pointed out the exact necklace I wanted, but my boyfriend still got me a different one and I hated it."
Sibley also said that "if your mom wears it, you shouldn't get it for your girlfriend."
"When all else fails," she said, "diamonds are always nice."
We've all received our share of awful gifts. So when it comes to deciding on that perfect gift, try to remember some of the great gifts you've received in the past.
The best gift Klootwyk's boyfriend gave her were earrings.
"I liked it because he put a lot of thought into it," she said.
Jackson's favorite gift was also a thoughtful one.
"The best gift I've ever gotten was a homemade blanket. It wasn't about how much money was spent, it was thought filled and perfect. I'm a tall guy and it was the first blanket I ever had that was big enough," he said.
