I rang in the New Year with my girlfriend, Laura. It was a peaceful night-no alcohol, no party, just sitting at home enjoying each other's company. Honestly, I couldn't think of a better way to start the year.
2007 was a year of growth of all sorts for me. The most important and probably the most noticeable was my spiritual growth. Except for a couple years in high school where I questioned everything, I've been a Christian my entire life. It wasn't until my relationship with Laura, though, that I began to really form a relationship with God.
Laura has always been a stronger Christian than I, so I guess you could consider her a sort of mentor to me. Because of her I started going to church again, forming a close relationship with my minister and devoting time to God each day.
One of my favorite memories of this year was all the time that I spent with Laura doing devotionals. Because of her I have formed a closer relationship to God and because of God I have formed a closer relationship to her.
My faith was really tested this fall when I reached a crisis in my life. I had two options, run away from God because my life was going horribly or run to God because I needed Him more than ever.
I chose to run to Him and it has been the best decision of my life. I have learned that we are not supposed to live a life on our own, but instead a life led by God. We make our lives harder and create unnecessary stress when we live without him.
I've also used my relationship with God to help others. The past couple of months some of my friends have been struggling with their faith. I have used what I have learned in my devotionals, church and Bible study to give them advice that has seemed to help them.
The other growth I experienced this year was in my maturity. Entering my senior year of college was a smack in the face. At 22 I realized that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.
As a history major with journalism and pre-law minors, I have a lot of options…perhaps too many. After taking a two-year break from writing, I think God has called me back to journalism with deciding to work for this publication. I graduate next December so hopefully by then I will have made up my mind.
