Eastern will be hosting a Relay For Life event Friday, April 18 beginning at 6 p.m. on the Panther Trail. This year's theme is "Cure-opoly."
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life helps fund cancer research and programs to help cancer patients.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser that brings together communities all over the nation. It is an all night event where teams designate at least one member at a time to walk or run on the track throughout the night.
So far, 38 teams have been created at Eastern. In order to form a team you must have 8 to 15 people, and create a team name that focuses on a board or video game. Registration is $25 per team, not per person. All of the money raised by the teams will go toward cancer research, education, survivorship, and advocacy.
Hosting the event is the Eastern Illinois chapter of Colleges Against Cancer. A program designed to help eliminate cancer by initiating and supporting the programs of the American Cancer Society on college campuses.
Relay For Life will be a night filled with numerous activities. A Survivor Walk will be held, along with a Luminaria ceremony. Games, prizes, and food will also be available.
"All of the girls of Epsilon Sigma Alpha are looking forward to participating in Relay For Life, said Epsilon Sigma Alpha member, Sarah Verley. "Many people have lost their lives to cancer or are still fighting it."
ESA is excited to raise money and show support in this nightlong walk to fight back against cancer, said Verley.
Since Relay For Life has been going on at Eastern, the school has raised almost $139,000 for the fight against cancer. This year's goal is recruit 50 teams, light the track with 300 luninaria, have 50 cancer survivors participate, and to raise $50,000.
This event gives students an opportunity to celebrate life, remember those who have lost their lives to cancer, and fight back against cancer. For more information on this event or to create a team, please visit www.eiurelay.org.
"We continue to try and find ways to reach out to the community and show cancer survivors, patients, and their family members that they have support," a member of Colleges Against Cancer, Barbara Harrington said.

The money for Relay for Life goes to a great cause. Many people know someone who has survived or died from cancer, which is why I think it is a major event that a lot of people attend. (Continued…)
