Spring break in Kentucky

Every semester, the one event I look forward to is Spring Break. It is a time for relaxation and time off of school. This past semester has been quite busy. I am a very involved person and I tend to like to be busy everyday. However, I sometimes feel like I need a break.
Most people like to head to Cancun or Florida for time in the sun, but I like to take time off my life to help serve others.
This Spring Break, I will travel to Kentucky with fellow Eastern students, where I will build homes for the less fortunate. I am going on this trip through the Student Volunteer Center and the Newman Catholic Center. This year they provided eight different sites to attend. Each site has its own purpose of existing.
I will attend the Christian Appalachian Project in McKee, Kentucky. There I will join over 100 college students around the country in rural Kentucky. Together we will help the people of Appalachia by working on home repair projects. One interesting thing I learned is we will also, work and interact with the people of the town.
This is not my first time doing this kind of service. Last Thanksgiving Break, I went to Greensburg, Kansas with a group of people from Newman Catholic Center. We went there to help with the tornado relief. Last May, a tornado damaged 75% of Greensburg, leaving the town to almost nothing.
As a group of 15, we took our break to serve others. The experience was worth my time and I look forward to helping others once again.
Some people ask why I do this and tell me I should spend more time helping out my own community. I tell them, I do help in my community, but whenever I get the chance to travel somewhere and help others outside my community, I will do it. Sometimes I feel like it's my calling.
Let's face it, I would love to go home and see my family and my dog, but I know they will always be there for me. This is my time to help others and myself.
After mission trips, I feel better about myself and it helps life be put back into perspective.
