Freshman year always seems so scary for most people, moving out of your house, making new friends, the whole learning experience is a cultural shock from what most incoming freshman are used to.
Dan Cusack, freshman, journalism major, said his favorite part about freshman year was getting away from home.
"Getting the freedom to do what ever the hell you want," Cusack said.
Excited to leave Carman Hall next year, he will be getting a house with four of his friends and will have even more freedom.
Cusack joined the Daily Eastern News staff the first day he got to school and has been working there ever since.
"I've got to meet a lot of new people, cover different sporting events," Cusack said. "We already have a year under our belt, I feel more responsible and I do more things for myself."
Brooke Beissel is a freshman only knowing a few people before coming to school. Now it might be tougher for her to leave because when she lived in Carman she made really good friends.
"I'm not going to be with my roommate and we got along really well," Beissel said.
Being at school helped Beissel become more independent and taught her time management. Her favorite part about freshman year was being on the Pink Panthers.
"I got to be involved with the EIU school spirit," Beissel said.
Beissel is not the only one who is going to have a hard time leaving Carman Hall, Michelle Hellesen, who has been living in the residence hall for three years now, is going to be leaving for the first time. Hellesen, junior elementary education major, has been an Residence assistant for two years now.
"My favorite part about being an R.A was seeing my girls grow," Hellesen said. "My favorite EIU moment was being a freshmen, all the crazieness and stuff."
Next year, Hellesen is going to move into a house with friends. Now for the first time in three years, she will have more time to do other things. Since being at Eastern, Hellesen has felt she grew up.

I disagree with the above remark. I think in these tough economic times we need to rethink our old ways of thinking.

Yes, the freshman year of college can be difficult for many people, especially if they are unaccustomed to taking responsibility for their own actions and have not developed the discipline necessary to keep up with one's own studies. (Continued…)

Interesting article. You really only live the fullest if you get a dorm on campus, which is something I couldn't afford to do.

If I could do my freshman year over again I'd live on campus and not take out any loans.
