Going to my EIU debut day in the summer of 2007 was a bit scary. This was the day when you get to make your schedule. I will admit that I got a little nervous because I had no idea what professors would be good. I asked the debut day leader for help and of coarse they can't help you. The next best resource, that everyone uses, is rateyourprofessor.com. As a freshman just decided to shoot in the dark, so to speak. I just chose the classes that were still open and weren't too early in the day. Without having much confidence in the professors that I had chosen I went back home and enjoyed the rest of my summer. That was a very risky move, but it was a move that I don't regret.

Finally two months later I was moved in Carman and was ready to start the year off right. I was a little nervous walking into the classroom not knowing what to expect, but I just sucked it up and dove head first.

The first day was ok, the professors seemed really nice and excited to be there. However, it was on the second day that I met the most amazing professor I've had thus far in my college career. It was my English 1001 class on Tuesday and Thursday with Mr. Hudek.

My first impression was that this professor seems pretty laid back and fun. And thankfully I was right. When he passed out the syllabus there was a picture of "The Simpsons" characters on the front page. At first I had no idea what this picture was about and how it would relate to the course. Then he dropped the big bomb.

He said, "In this class we will be watching 'The Simpsons'". My mouth dropped, I thought this was the coolest thing ever! Then after my initial reaction I thought to myself, what's the catch. The point of watching "The Simpson's," was to gain a better understanding of the world around us. We'd watch for the social issues that were addressed in the episodes.

That wasn't what we did all semester; we later learned how to analyze art and images in the mass media. It was actually really cool. Now when ever I see a piece of art or watch a television show I am able to understand the meaning behind the image. Mr. Hudek was able to open my eyes. The best part is that he did it in an interesting and fun way.

If you ever get the opportunity to get Hudek as a teacher, take it because you will never regret it.
